Computer Science Glossary
Computer Science : Network Management Glossory
Hi, my name is Rim Aboudrar. I am 19 years old and have been studying at College Montmorency for two years. I am enrolled in Computer Science with a focus on Network Management. In Quebec, Canada, we have a different education system that includes cegep. Cegep is a stage between high school and university that helps students prepare for higher education. This glossary is designed for students who may still struggle with some vocabulary in the field of Network Management. It provides definitions, audio pronunciations, and examples for 20 key terms, making learning more accessible.
- algorithm
- noun
- A process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer.
- Example: To describe a program, as its name indicates it, a basic ALGORITHM is a sort of very simplified.
- en: Algorithme
- bandwidth
- noun
- A range of frequencies within a given band, in particular that used for transmitting a signal.
- Example: The codes have been written to find the maximum possible loop gain over a specified BANDWIDTH.
- en: Bande passante
- cache
- noun
- An auxiliary memory from which high-speed retrieval is possible.
- Example: An access to the main memory is longer than an access to the CACHE memory.
- en: Cache
- cloud computing
- noun
- The practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.
- Example: Many companies use CLOUD COMPUTING to store their data securely without needing physical servers.
- cooling fan
- noun
- A device used in computers and networking equipment to prevent overheating and maintain optimal performance.
- Example: The server room requires a high-performance COOLING FAN to prevent the equipment from overheating.
- en: Ventilateur de refroidissement

- cybersecurity
- noun
- The state of being protected against the criminal or unauthorized use of electronic data, or the measures taken to achieve this.
- Example: Strong passwords and multi-factor authentication are essential for maintaining CYBERSECURITY in an organization.
- en: Cybersécurité
- dhcp (dynamic host configuration protocol)
- noun
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a network protocol whose role is to ensure the automatic configuration of the IP parameters of a station or machine.
- Example: The IT team configured the DHCP SERVER to automatically assign IP ADDRESSES to all devices on the NETWORK.
- en: DHCP (protocole de configuration dynamique de l'hôte)
- dns (domain name system)
- noun
- The Domain Name System or DNS is a distributed computing service that associates Internet domain names with their IP addresses.
- Example: When you type a website address into your browser, the DNS translates it into an IP ADDRESS to locate the server.
- en: DNS (Système de noms de domaine)
- encryption
- noun
- The process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorized access.
- Example: This is usually achieved through using some form of data ENCRYPTION.
- en: Cryptage
- ethernet cable
- noun
- A cable used to connect devices (PCs, routers, switches) to a wired network.
- Example: To get a more stable internet connection, I connected my computer to the router using an ETHERNET CABLE.
- en: Câble Ethernet

- fiber optic cable
- noun
- A high-speed transmission cable that uses light signals instead of electrical signals to transfer data over long distances.
- Example: Internet providers use FIBER OPTIC CABLES to ensure high-speed data transmission with minimal interference.
- en: Câble à fibre optique

- firewall
- noun
- A part of a computer system or network which is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication.
- Example: A FIREWALL is an information technology security device.
- en: Pare-feu
- ip address
- noun
- A unique string of characters that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
- Example: From here typing 'ipconfig' should bring up details of the computer's IP ADDRESS.
- en: Adresse IP
- packet
- noun
- A block of data transmitted across a network.
- Example: When you stream a video online, the data is broken down into small PACKETS and sent to your device for playback.
- en: Paquet
- patch panel
- noun
- A board in a switchboard, computer, or other device with a number of electric sockets that may be connected in various combinations.
- Example: The technician organized all network connections in the server room using a PATCH PANEL.
